Matteo Cancellieri Demonstrates Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, before he admitted that the club had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Rumours that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if they're getting better or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

At least one man kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, then a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those as a substitute. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
